UK Harvest Update

Harvest results for oriental and yellow mustard crops showed mixed performance, influenced by soil conditions and a dry spring. Quality remains strong, with most crops harvested below 9% moisture content.

Oriental Mustard

Around 1,100 acres of Oriental Mustard was sown this year. Yields have been above average on suitable soils and slightly below average where soil types have been less favourable. Conditions particularly favoured the winter planted crops but the exceedingly dry spring has produced a larger proportion of slightly smaller seed.

Yellow Mustard

Approximately 2,600 acres of Spring sown Yellow Mustard was planted, but it had a slightly more challenging growing season due to the particularly dry spring. Comparatively, earlier drilled crops fared better.

Around 1,800 acres of winter sown Yellow Mustard was planted. It seems to have had the most productive year to date.

Winter variety Mustards

As reported in Farmers Weekly back in 2023, our growers are able to successfully grow both spring sown and overwintered yellow and oriental mustard.

“The new overwintered variety is as frost tolerant as we can get,” explained Greg Bliss, one of the founding Directors of Condimentum. "It a real point of difference for the UK grown crop and provides increased security of supply for Condimentum's customers".

Overwintered mustard varieties have a range of advantages, especially when it comes to avoiding the pest pressures associated with the later-flowering spring types and the risk that a very dry spring season poses to small-seeded crops.

The English Mustard Growers (EMG) has worked closely with Elsoms to create the overwintered varieties. Alongside Condimentum, the three businesses continue to work on a range of projects aimed at strengthening the resilience of the UKs mustard supply.

In Summary

Overall, quality looks very good with nearly all crops harvested below 9% moisture content. Condimentum's harvest intake checks have also shown some very high quality crops from 2025.
